Stefano Puliti: ‘SingleTree Will Transform How We Understand and Manage Forests in Europe’

What is the SingleTree project really about? And will we get to see its groundbreaking technology in action? These are just some of the questions we put to one of the project’s coordinators, Stefano Puliti, during the official kick-off meeting held in September 2024.

Stefano Puliti, researcher at NIBIO and key figure in the project’s leadership team, shared some insights in a refreshingly straightforward way:

“The aim of SingleTree is to create digital value chains at the level of individual trees—something that can be scaled and applied across Europe, from Spain to Greece,” he explained.

“To do this, we’re setting up Living Labs—essentially real-world testing grounds where we can experiment with new technologies, put our algorithms and models to the test, and gather valuable data. This feedback loop helps researchers refine and improve the methods.”

The project will launch three Living Labs across different forest types in Europe, each tailored to specific environmental and management conditions. One will be based in Spain, focusing on Mediterranean forests. Another will be located in Switzerland, representing Central European mixed forests with both coniferous and broadleaf species. The third will be set in Sweden, exploring boreal forests characterized by intensive management and fully integrated value chains.

These Living Labs won’t just serve researchers—they’ll be collaborative hubs where technology, science, and sustainable forestry come together to shape the future of forest management in Europe.
