SingleTree Progress and Outlook: Building a Strong Foundation for Impact

The SingleTree project has reached an important milestone, closing its first 18-month reporting period within the broader four-year initiative running from 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2028. These opening months have been dedicated to building the essential infrastructure needed to transform how forests are managed across Europe. And according to the project team, that foundation is now firmly in place.

Far from being a quiet setup phase, the early period of SingleTree has seen rapid technical development. The project has focused on creating the “scaffolding” required for long-term innovation—work that includes deploying cutting-edge data-capture technologies, designing new management frameworks, and establishing the traceability systems that will follow a tree’s value from forest to final use.

With these elements now operational, SingleTree is preparing to shift gears and accelerate the technical execution that will define the rest of the project.

 

Living Labs Bring Technology Into Real Forest Value Chains

One of the clearest signs of progress is the successful integration of the project’s technical work packages into its three Living Lab Value Chains (LLVCs). These Living Labs serve as real-world testing grounds, ensuring that innovations are shaped by the needs, constraints, and opportunities of local communities and industries.

Stakeholder engagement has also been strong, boosted by significant growth across the project’s communication channels. This early visibility is helping create a broader community around SingleTree’s mission.

Setting the Stage for Five Key Outcomes

Looking ahead, SingleTree is positioning itself to deliver concrete advances across five strategic areas:

  • Environmental gains, driven by new, high-resolution data models that support smarter forest management.
  • Greater biomass efficiency, ensuring that each piece of wood is directed toward its highest-value use.
  • Stronger regional innovation ecosystems, built through engagement and co-creation in the Living Labs.
  • A sustainable, digital single-tree management framework, adaptable to different forest contexts.
  • Socioeconomic benefits, achieved through traceability and site-specific bucking that help keep value in local economies.

Early Signals of Broader Scientific, Social, and Economic Impact

As a Research and Innovation Action (RIA), SingleTree operates at lower Technology Readiness Levels, meaning its major impacts will unfold gradually. But the project is already laying the groundwork for far-reaching change.

SingleTree plans to release unique open-access datasets and advanced “foundation models” that could redefine what is technologically possible in the forest sector. Social and environmental considerations remain central, thanks to a focus on Life Cycle Assessment and collaborative design with stakeholders. Economically, the project aims to demonstrate how digital tools can connect every link of the wood value chain—offering a model that other industries may soon follow.

On Track and Looking Forward

The next phase will place special emphasis on clustering with similar European initiatives, strengthening collaborations and sharing insights to maximize collective impact.

As SingleTree moves beyond its foundational stage, the message from the team is clear: the groundwork has been laid, momentum is building, and the project is ready to deliver on its promise of a more data-driven, sustainable future for forest management.
